The closest happy hours near NYU are Amity Hall on West 3rd Street and White Oak Tavern and Josie Woods Pub on Waverly Place, each two to four minutes from the middle of Washington Square Park. For beer go to The Red Lion or Phebes, for cocktails try White Oak Tavern, and for bar food head to Little Havana or The Spaniard.

Washington Square Park is the front yard of NYU, and plenty of after-class and after-work drinks sit within ten minutes of its center. We measured from the center of the park to every bar in our database and kept the ones within about 900 meters, then picked seven that cover the three things people around campus ask for: cheap beer, a proper cocktail, and food that counts as dinner.

The picks below run from closest to farthest, with the walk in minutes from the middle of the park. Most of these happy hours run on weekdays, which suits a class or office schedule. Prices are live on each card and in the table at the bottom, which lists every happy hour near the park, closest first.

For students: 21 means 21

The legal age to buy alcohol in New York is 21, and bars can be penalized for serving anyone younger, whatever the person looks like or claims. Expect to be asked for ID, even at an afternoon happy hour.

Bring a real government ID. The New York State Liquor Authority lists a valid driver's license from New York, another state or Canada, a New York non-driver ID, a U.S. military ID, or a valid passport as acceptable proof of age. A college ID is not enough on its own; the SLA says it can only back up one of those documents. New York's Mobile ID is also accepted, per a 2024 SLA advisory.

On a student budget, the long weekday windows help. Amity Hall and White Oak Tavern start around midday, so a gap between classes can line up with happy hour. For beer, The Red Lion, The Spaniard and Phebes all put draft beer on the happy hour menu. For food that works as dinner, Little Havana and The Spaniard are the two to know.

For faculty and visitors

If you want a quieter drink or are meeting visiting parents, look north of the park. On West 8th Street, 8th Street Winecellar runs a daily happy hour on select glasses and bottles, plus an oyster happy hour Monday through Thursday. Its neighbor Amelie Wine Bar, a French bistro, has a daily happy hour in the late afternoon. On West 10th Street, APERITIVO by CARTA does weekday wine, spritzes, oysters, beer, cider, zero-proof drinks and plates to share, and takes table bookings for groups.

For a sit-down meal with a deal, White Oak Tavern's gastropub menu works. The Grey Dog on University Place, a few minutes northeast of the park, runs happy hour every day, with house wine, margaritas, spritzes and bar bites, which makes it an easy pick for a weekend visit.

Most of these places post a booking link on their cards. For a department gathering, book ahead and ask whether the happy hour applies at your table, since several deals near the park are bar only.

Areas around campus

Think of the park as the center of four small clusters. Just east, on Waverly Place, White Oak Tavern and Josie Woods Pub sit a few doors apart near the 8th Street-NYU station on the R and W. North, along West 8th Street, are the wine bars, close to the West 4th Street station. South, West 3rd Street and Bleecker Street hold Amity Hall and The Red Lion, the sports and music end of the neighborhood.

West of Sixth Avenue, Cornelia Street has Little Havana and West 4th Street has The Spaniard, both near Christopher Street-Stonewall on the 1. Southeast of the park, on the Bowery, Phebes is close to the Bleecker Street station. Below Houston Street, SoHo adds Cómodo, and on Sixth Avenue the West Village adds Cha Cha Tang, both with weekday happy hours within about seven minutes of the park.

If you want a longer night, the West Village bar crawl starts about ten minutes west of the park. On weekends, when most of these windows are off, Josie Woods Pub, The Grey Dog and the West 8th Street wine bars still run daily.

Questions

What is the drinking age in New York?

21. New York law bars the sale of alcohol to anyone under 21, and the State Liquor Authority holds bars responsible even if a customer looked older or lied about their age.

Is an NYU ID enough to get served?

No. The State Liquor Authority does not accept a college ID as primary proof of age. Bring a driver's license, a non-driver state ID, a U.S. military ID or a passport. A college ID can only back one of those up.

What is the closest happy hour to Washington Square Park?

Amity Hall on West 3rd Street, about two minutes from the middle of the park. White Oak Tavern and Josie Woods Pub on Waverly Place are next, at three to four minutes.

Where can I find cheap beer near NYU?

Phebes on the Bowery has beers and Guinness and Stella drafts on its weekday happy hour. The Red Lion pours its house draft and The Spaniard discounts all drafts. Check the live prices on each card.

Are there happy hours near NYU on weekends?

Yes. Josie Woods Pub and The Grey Dog on University Place run every day, and 8th Street Winecellar, Amelie Wine Bar and Pepe Rosso also list daily happy hours.

Which happy hours near NYU are good for food?

For a full meal, Little Havana's Cuban sandwich and nachos and The Spaniard's smash burger with fries are the most filling options on this list.

How we put this together

We measured straight-line distances from the center of Washington Square Park to every bar in our New York happy hour database and kept those within about 900 meters, converting to walking minutes at about 80 meters per minute. Schedules, items and subway details come from each bar's own website, last checked September 2 and 3, 2026. Drinking age and ID rules come from the New York State Liquor Authority.
