Cheap beer in NYC usually means a happy hour draft, a can of domestic lager or a house pint priced well below the regular tap list. Plenty of bars on our list carry the cheap beer tag, and Manhattan holds most of them. Times Square and the blocks of Koreatown, Flatiron and the Financial District have the densest clusters, with the Upper West Side, Murray Hill and Midtown close behind. In Brooklyn, Williamsburg leads, followed by Greenpoint and Bushwick. Astoria carries the Queens entries, and the Bronx is represented too.

Expect the deal to name a type rather than a brand: domestic drafts, house beers, select cans. A few bars go further with a bucket of bottles or a pitcher. Most run on weekdays between the end of the workday and dinner, and a fair share add Saturday or Sunday. One tip: ask which taps count before you order, because some bars limit the price to one or two lines.

    Hard Rock Cafe sits at 1501 Broadway, two minutes from the Times Square station and its twelve lines. During the weekday happy hour, domestic and imported drafts each get a set price, and cocktails are discounted too. It works as a stop before a show, and the restaurant takes reservations, which helps with a group in Midtown.

Midtown dominates: Times Square, Koreatown and Flatiron together account for about a fifth of the cheap beer bars on our list. Downtown, part of the Financial District group sits around Stone Street and Pearl Street near Whitehall Street–South Ferry. In Brooklyn, look along the L in Williamsburg and Bushwick, or near the G in Greenpoint, where Keg & Lantern and Black Rabbit are a short walk apart.
