Every bar on this page has at least one happy hour drink priced at or under the cap in the page title, which makes it the list to open when the budget is tight. Cheap drinks in NYC are not spread evenly. Astoria and the Times Square area have the most entries, followed by Koreatown, Flatiron, the Financial District, Murray Hill and both the Upper East and Upper West Sides. In Brooklyn, Bushwick, Williamsburg, Park Slope and Greenpoint lead. Staten Island and the Bronx are represented too.

The low-priced pour is usually a draft beer, a well drink, a shot or a glass of house wine; cocktails rarely make the cut. Many bars list one cheap item next to pricier ones, so the number on each card is the floor, not the average. Most windows close in the early evening on weekdays. To stretch the budget, pick a bar where the cheap item is something you actually want, and check whether it is a specific brand, a can or a draft.

Reservations are accepted.

What the cheap item usually is

Draft beer and well drinks make up most of the low prices here, with house wine and shots close behind. Cocktails at this level are rare: Flying Cock in Kips Bay lists an espresso martini and La Caverna on the Lower East Side lists margaritas on Tuesday, both well under the cap. Several menus name a single beer or a can for the cheapest slot, so read the item name, not just the price.

Before you go

The price on the board comes before tax and tip: New York adds 8.875 percent in sales tax, and 18 to 20 percent is the usual tip, which matters more when the drink itself is cheap. Bars often keep these prices to the bar area. Each listing carries the date we last checked it, and prices at this level move quickly, so look before you go.
