halima, a Nigerian artist based in NYC, hosts the Scorpio Season edition of Club Cocoa at The House in Brooklyn on Friday, November 13. The series is a young queer party made by and for the African diaspora, framed as a way of reclaiming queer African cultures that have been erased or misrepresented. The promoter points to Lagos' Festac 77 festival as an inspiration, and halima will perform new, unreleased songs live.
The promoter pitches the night as a safe space where queer Africans and the wider pan-African community can show up as themselves. After halima's live set, three NYC DJs carry the dance floor through the night. No theme or dress code is confirmed beyond the Scorpio Season billing. My take: this is a night for queer diaspora dancers who want a room built around community as much as around the music.
Confirmed in the DICE description: halima (live, premiering unreleased songs) and DJs Ubabu, Ch3ri and Nebula. DICE's structured performer data lists only halima and UBABU, but the description names all four. The promoter does not name specific genres. Set times and running order are not confirmed.
Listed on DICE: Halima, UBABU.
Doors are listed at 10 PM on Friday, November 13, and the event ends at 3:45 AM. It is 21+. The listed address is 29 Locust Street, Brooklyn. Re-entry, bag or coat check, accessibility and the nearest subway are not confirmed.
Happy hours within a short walk of The House that run on Friday before doors, with the deal as published.
