Things to do in NYC at night, one stage at a time

The easiest way to plan things to do in NYC at night is in stages. Start with a rooftop round at Glass Ceiling Rooftop in Koreatown or Castell Rooftop Lounge near Times Square, eat off a happy hour menu at Papacito's in Greenpoint or Burgerology in Astoria, then pick a club night from our parties list. Finish at Soho Diner on Friday or Saturday, or at Meller's on the Upper East Side early in the week.

New York does not really have one night out. It has several, stacked on top of each other. The bars that discount drinks right after work are rarely the places that are busy after midnight, and the rooms where DJs play often do not get going until most happy hours have ended. If you plan the night as a series of stages, each with its own spot, you spend less and wait in fewer lines.

This guide walks through those stages in order: an early happy hour, a rooftop or a view, a dinner built from a happy hour menu, live music or a club night, a late deal, and a few free things that work after dark. Each stage links to a live page on yaynyc.com, so you can check what is running tonight instead of trusting a list that was right last month.

The picks below come from our bar data and spread across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. Every card shows the current hours and prices. Use the guide to choose the order, and the cards to check the clock.

The deal covers classic cocktails such as margaritas, old fashioneds and seasonal spritzes, plus martinis and beer. The window is short and early, so come straight from work. The bar's own menu also mentions a second round later at night. The 28th Street R and W station is a minute away.

A rooftop lounge inside the AC Hotel Times Square on West 40th Street, with Spanish tapas, small plates and flatbreads on the menu. The happy hour runs Monday to Friday and covers cocktails, wine and beer. It sits steps from Broadway, so it works as the first stop before a show. The 42nd Street-Port Authority station, served by a dozen lines, is three minutes away on foot.

Two orders of sliders make a cheap dinner before a night out in Astoria or the ride back into Manhattan.

The happy hour covers sangria, margaritas, house wines and every beer, Monday to Thursday, with an earlier window on Friday. Add a few plates from the regular menu and it becomes dinner. It is the northern end of this guide and a good start for anyone who lives uptown.

Early evening: happy hour and a view

Start the night when the deals start. Most happy hours on our list run on weekdays in the late afternoon and early evening, and many end before a typical dinner reservation. Open happy hours running now to see what is live at this minute, or the happy hour map to find the closest deal to wherever you are standing.

If you want a view with the first drink, go up early. Rooftop deals are a short list, and nearly all of them run on weekdays and close early in the evening. Glass Ceiling Rooftop is the exception that runs every day, and Castell covers the weekdays near Times Square. The rooftop happy hours page has the rest. Open-air seating depends on the weather, so check before you head up on a cold or wet night.

Dinner from a happy hour menu

A happy hour with food can stand in for dinner if you order with a plan. Papacito's in Greenpoint has tacos and nachos on its list every day, Burgerology in Astoria discounts a whole slider menu on weekdays, and Tin Marin in Riverdale is a tapas restaurant with sangria on its happy hour. The happy hour food deals page lists every bar that includes food, and our cheap happy hour food guide goes deeper.

Two habits help. Food deals are often served at the bar only, so sit there. And order food early in the window, because kitchens tend to get slower as the after-work crowd arrives.

Live music and club nights

Club nights in New York start late and lean toward Friday and Saturday. On our NYC parties list, Bushwick has the most nights, followed by Williamsburg, with Ridgewood in Queens and Chelsea, Flatiron and the Lower East Side in Manhattan close behind. Most of them are 21 and over, so bring ID. Browse by sound with house, techno, Latin, disco or jazz, or use the party map.

A few nights coming up stand out. The Ritual with Anané and Louie Vega is a Sunday house session at H0L0 in Ridgewood on October 18. Soul In The Horn with Natasha Diggs brings house, soul, disco, funk and hip hop to Bushwick on Friday, October 23. Regal86, 1OO1O, Shekdash and 1morning mix Latin club rhythms with techno and breaks at 314 Scholes Street in Williamsburg on Friday, November 13. Techno Thursday: Melodic2Hard takes over SILO's main room in Bushwick on November 19, free with an RSVP. And Time Warp NYC runs two nights at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on November 20 and 21, with Sven Väth, DVS1 and VTSS on the bill. For the costume weekend, see Halloween parties.

Late night and last call

The second round of deals comes after dark. A late night happy hour usually starts after the dinner rush, and most of them run early in the week rather than on Friday and Saturday. Meller's on the Upper East Side fits a Sunday to Thursday night, while Soho Diner saves its food deal for the weekend. Papacito's in Greenpoint adds a deal in the last hour of every night. Our reverse happy hour guide covers the format in more detail.

Getting home is part of the plan. The subway runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but not every line runs at all times, and late-night routes change, per the MTA. Check the MTA trip planner or app before you order the last round, and pick a final stop on a line that runs all night.

Free things to do at night

Some of the city's big views cost nothing. The Staten Island Ferry is free and runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, between Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan and St. George on Staten Island, according to NYC DOT. The crossing takes about 25 minutes each way, with views of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Lower Manhattan skyline. Boats run less often late at night, so check the schedule on the ferry's site. For a drink before boarding, see happy hours near South Ferry.

Walking the Brooklyn Bridge is free too. NYC DOT runs the promenade, which has its own path for pedestrians beside a protected bike lane, and weekend crowds can be heavy, so a weeknight walk is calmer. Two park options work in the evening: the High Line is free and open until the evening, with earlier closing in winter, per its official site, and Central Park is open daily until 1 a.m., per the Central Park Conservancy. Pair a High Line walk with happy hours near the High Line.

How we put this together

Bar picks come from our list of NYC bars, with each happy hour taken from the bar's own website and rechecked on October 15, 2026; we left out bars whose latest recheck found a changed or partial deal. Parties come from our published party list, last checked in October 2026, and only upcoming nights are named. Ferry facts come from NYC DOT and the Staten Island Ferry, subway hours from the MTA, Brooklyn Bridge details from NYC DOT, High Line hours from Friends of the High Line and Central Park hours from the Central Park Conservancy, all checked October 16, 2026.
