Times Square is the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, and the bars on our list fan out from it in three directions. One group sits in the West 40s near the Port Authority Bus Terminal, another runs along Broadway and the side streets of the upper 40s, and a third gathers on West 54th to 57th Streets around Seventh Avenue, close to Carnegie Hall. The 42nd Street station complex, with twelve lines, covers the south end, while 49th Street, 50th Street and 57th Street–7th Avenue handle the rest.

Happy hour in Times Square is mostly a weekday, early evening affair, and restaurants supply many of the deals: oysters at Blue Fin, barbecue at Famous Dave's, tropical cocktails at Havana Central, flavored vodka at Russian Samovar. A second wave starts late at night, at Tanner Smith's every day and at Bartley's early in the week. If you have theater tickets, the timing helps: most windows close before evening curtains go up, so have a drink first and eat after the show.

On weekdays the deal covers cocktails, wines and beer, which makes it a handy after-work meeting point three minutes from the 42nd Street–Port Authority station. Reservations go through OpenTable.

Getting there

Twelve lines meet at the 42nd Street complex, which joins the Times Square and Port Authority stations and is closest to bars on West 40th to 44th Streets such as Castell, Fushimi and Gyu-Kaku. For the upper 40s, use 49th Street on the N, R and W, or 50th Street on the C and E or the 1. The 7th Avenue stop on the B, D and E and 57th Street–7th Avenue on the N, Q, R and W serve the cluster near Carnegie Hall, and 47th–50th Streets–Rockefeller Center on the B, D, F and M covers Sixth Avenue.

Before you go

Menu prices in New York leave out the 8.875 percent sales tax, and servers expect an 18 to 20 percent tip on top. Around Times Square several restaurants, including Blue Fin, Fushimi and Bill's Bar & Burger, limit the deal to the bar, so a table may mean full price.
