What Time Do Bars Close in NYC? The 4 a.m. Rule, Explained
What time do bars close in NYC? Legally, 4 a.m., every night, in all five boroughs, and you get half an hour after that to finish your drink. Sales can start again at 8 a.m., or 10 a.m. on Sunday. Plenty of bars close earlier by choice, so for a deal after dark try Barfly in Gramercy or Meller's Sports Hub & Grill on the Upper East Side, which run happy hour late into the night early in the week.
New York bars can legally serve late, and the rule is the same in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. The State Liquor Authority lists the hours county by county, and all five New York City counties match: bars, taverns and restaurants can serve until 4 a.m. Saturday night is no exception, because the Sunday rule only changes when serving can start again in the morning.
The legal limit is a ceiling, not a promise, and your local may lock up long before it on a Tuesday. Below: what the law says, how last call works, why many places close early, what ID to carry, and where to find late happy hours. The six picks are bars on our list with a happy hour that ends late in the evening or after midnight, spread across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

Last call vs. closing time
Closing time is set by law. Last call is set by the bar. State law bars on-premises sales between 4 a.m. and 8 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and until 10 a.m. on Sunday, according to the State Liquor Authority's pages for New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx and Richmond counties. The same law adds a grace period: nobody may drink on the premises later than half an hour after the cutoff.
Last call is the warning that comes before all that. Bartenders call it ahead of their own closing time so they can clear glasses, settle tabs and get people out on time. Some bars ring a bell, some flip the lights. If you want one more round, order it when you hear the call, not after the music stops.
Why many bars close earlier
The 4 a.m. limit is the latest a bar may serve, not the time it has to stay open. Each bar picks its own hours inside that window, and on a weeknight in a residential block that often means closing well before the legal limit. Kitchens can stop earlier than the bar, so if food matters, ask before you settle in. The State Liquor Authority can also set tighter hours for an individual license, so two bars on the same street can keep different schedules.
The practical move is simple: look at the posted hours for the night you are going, not a general rule. Hours often differ from one night of the week to the next, and our happy hour now page shows which deals are running at the moment you open it.
Bring ID: the 21+ rule
You must be 21 to buy or be served alcohol in New York, and bars take it seriously because the license holder is on the hook even if a guest looked older or lied. Under state law, accepted proof of age is a valid driver's license or non-driver ID issued by a government, a valid passport, or a U.S. armed forces ID. College IDs do not count as the main proof, and an expired card can be turned away.
For visitors from outside the U.S., the passport is the safe choice, because the list covers driver's licenses from U.S. states and territories and Canadian provinces but not from other countries. New York's Mobile ID is also accepted. Expect to be carded at busy spots, whatever your age.
Late-night happy hours and parties
A happy hour after dark usually means a reverse happy hour: a second, shorter window after the dinner rush. On our list, 23 bars have a window that ends late in the evening or after midnight, and none of them are in the Bronx or Staten Island yet. After-midnight deals lean toward the start of the week: Barfly and Meller's run Sunday through Thursday, while Soho Diner saves its deal for Friday and Saturday. Our late-night happy hours page keeps the full list current, and the reverse happy hour guide covers the second-window idea in more depth.
If you would rather dance than sit at a bar, our NYC parties list collects club nights and events with the venue and date for each. Check each party's ticket listing for end times. The same 4 a.m. rule applies to alcohol at licensed venues, even when the music keeps going.
Getting home after closing
The subway runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year, which is a big part of why a 4 a.m. closing works here. Not every route runs overnight, though, and late-night trains come less often, so check the MTA app or station signs before you rely on a specific line. Pay your tab before last call so you are not stuck in the closing rush.

Questions
Do NYC bars close at 4 a.m. on weekends too?
Yes. The legal cutoff for on-premises sales is 4 a.m. every day of the week in all five boroughs. Saturday night runs to 4 a.m. Sunday morning. The Sunday rule only means sales cannot restart until 10 a.m., instead of 8 a.m. on other days.
What time can bars start serving on Sunday in New York City?
At 10 a.m., according to the State Liquor Authority's county pages for New York City. Monday through Saturday, on-premises sales can start at 8 a.m. Many bars open much later.
How long do I have to finish my drink after closing?
State law says nobody may drink on a licensed premises later than half an hour after sales must stop. At a bar open to the legal limit, that means roughly half an hour after 4 a.m.
Is closing time the same in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens?
Yes. The State Liquor Authority lists the same on-premises hours for all five New York City counties: New York (Manhattan), Kings (Brooklyn), Queens, Bronx and Richmond (Staten Island).
What ID do tourists need to get into a bar in NYC?
Bring your passport. State law accepts a valid passport, a U.S. armed forces ID, or a valid driver's license or non-driver ID from a U.S. state or territory or a Canadian province. A driver's license from another country is not on that list.
Which NYC bars have a happy hour after midnight?
On our list, Barfly in Gramercy and Meller's Sports Hub & Grill on the Upper East Side run late Sunday through Thursday, and Soho Diner runs a food happy hour after midnight on Friday and Saturday. Lovers of Today in the East Village and Blue Haven in Kips Bay also run late early in the week.
How we put this together
Legal hours come from the New York State Liquor Authority's county pages for all five New York City counties, the half-hour drinking rule from an SLA briefing document quoting the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law, ID rules from SLA guidance, and subway hours from the MTA rider guide, all checked October 16, 2026. Bar picks come from the 718 bars on our list: we kept those with a happy hour window ending late in the evening or after midnight (23 bars) and picked six across three boroughs. Deals come from each bar's own website, checked between September 2 and October 15, 2026.
