Where to celebrate a birthday in NYC: bars that take bookings
If you are working out where to celebrate a birthday in NYC with a group, book a bar that takes reservations and runs a happy hour on your day. Friki Tiki in Hell's Kitchen covers Tuesday to Sunday with buckets and a drink list sized for four, The Ten Bells Brooklyn in Bushwick runs every day with oysters and tapas a few minutes from House of Yes, and Loreley on the Lower East Side pours liter steins and pitchers Monday through Thursday. We list 223 bookable happy hour bars across 50 neighborhoods.
A birthday out with friends has two problems: getting a table for everyone and keeping the tab reasonable. Bars that take reservations and also run a happy hour solve both. You lock in the space, and the first rounds cost less while people trickle in.
On our list, 223 bars with a happy hour also take bookings through Resy, OpenTable, SevenRooms or Tock, spread across 50 neighborhoods. We picked seven in seven neighborhoods and three boroughs, favoring deals that work for a group: pitchers, steins, buckets, carafes and plates meant for sharing. Booking tips for a birthday group
Book from the link on each card, and do it early if the birthday falls on a Friday or Saturday. Most bars on our list use Resy (152 of the 223 bookable ones) or OpenTable (57), so one account covers almost everything. Give an honest headcount: a table for eight that turns into twelve is the fastest way to lose it.
When you book, ask one question: does the happy hour apply at a reserved table? At some bars it does not. Osteria Nonnino, for example, serves its deal at the bar and in the outdoor area only, so plan to start there and move to the table for food. If you want to bring a cake, ask that too, since every bar sets its own rule.
Set the start time inside the happy hour window on the card, not at the end of it. Guests arrive late, and the first round is the one that saves the most.
Match the day to the deal
Weekday birthdays are easy: most happy hours run Monday through Friday. Weekends are harder. Of the 223 bookable bars with a happy hour on our list, 96 have one on Saturday or Sunday. Among our picks, Friki Tiki, The Ten Bells Brooklyn, The Horny Ram, Osteria Nonnino and Addictive Wine and Tapas all cover the weekend.
For a Monday or Tuesday birthday, Loreley is the standout, with its longest window on those two nights. The Penrose is a weekday choice, though its brunch deal and nightly late-night drinks stretch it further. The Horny Ram's second window, late in the evening every night, is the one to use if the group meets after dinner. Our weekend happy hours page lists every Saturday and Sunday option.
Splitting the bill without a scene
Decide how you will pay before the first round. The simplest system is one tab on one card, settled by payment app at the end, with the birthday person's share split among everyone else. If the group would rather pay separately, ask the server at the start, not when the check arrives.

Some bars add their own fees; Addictive Wine and Tapas, for one, notes a fee on card payments on its site, so read the check before you divide it.
Going dancing after
Three of our picks sit close to party venues on our NYC parties list. The Ten Bells Brooklyn is the clearest: House of Yes, with 15 upcoming parties on our list, is about three minutes away, Sea Wolf Bushwick about the same, and Elsewhere about seven. On the Lower East Side, Cosmo and Outer Heaven are about a minute from Loreley, and Capitale is about five. In the West Village, Common Ground Bar is roughly two minutes from Osteria Nonnino and The Standard Biergarten about four.
Check each party page for the date, start time and age limit before you promise the group a dance floor. Many parties sell tickets in advance, so buy them while you are booking the table.
