Cheap date night NYC: happy hours for two

The simplest cheap date night NYC plan: book the happy hour window instead of the dinner slot. Therapy Wine Bar in Bed-Stuy and Mayfield in Crown Heights run their deals every day, Big Tiny in Carroll Gardens covers Sunday through Thursday, and Bar Baserri in Williamsburg and La Devozione in Chelsea turn small plates into dinner. Then walk it off for free in Domino Park, on the High Line or in Central Park.

A date in New York gets expensive at the same moment every night: when the happy hour ends and the regular menu comes back. Move the date earlier and the same room, the same bartender and often the same wine list cost a lot less. Many restaurants take reservations for that early slot too, so you can plan it like a proper night out instead of hoping for two stools.

This guide is built for two people who want a real evening without a big bill. The picks are wine bars, cocktail bars and restaurants with small plates, chosen from our bar data for what the deal actually covers and which days it runs. They sit in eight different neighborhoods across Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, so there is likely one near you or near where you are staying.

After the picks you will find how to time the date around the window, how to choose between wine, cocktails and food, and which free walks sit close to the bars. Each card below shows the live hours and prices, so check it on the day.

Our picks

  1. 1. Therapy Wine Bar Bed-Stuy

    $8.25 house cocktails, wine
    Daily 12pm–7pm · 260 Malcolm X Blvd · Utica Avenue (A, C)

A wine bar on Malcolm X Boulevard in Bed-Stuy with a window that opens at midday and runs into the early evening, every day of the week. The deal covers house cocktails, including sangria, and a red or white wine of the day, with bites such as lemon hummus, buffalo chicken rolls and mozzarella sticks. It is in-house only. Utica Avenue on the A and C is about seven minutes away.

Deal checked Oct 15, 2026 on the bar's own site.

  2. 2. Bar Baserri Williamsburg

    Spanish Olives $10
    Tue–Thu 5pm–7pm · 225 Kent Ave · Bedford Avenue (L)

A Basque bar on Kent Avenue in Williamsburg whose happy hour is mostly food, Tuesday to Thursday: pan con tomate, patatas bravas with miso mayo and chipotle, and marinated Spanish olives with bread. These are plates made for sharing across a small table. Domino Park is a few minutes' walk away on the waterfront for after. Bedford Avenue on the L is about nine minutes on foot.

Deal checked Oct 15, 2026 on the bar's own site.

  3. 3. Big Tiny Carroll Gardens

    $11 wine, spritz or sour
    Mon–Thu, Sun 5pm–6:30pm · 244 Smith St · Bergen Street (F, G)

A restaurant on Smith Street in Carroll Gardens with a happy hour Sunday through Thursday. One deal covers a glass of red, white, rosé, orange or sparkling wine or the house spritz, and the menu adds combos that pair a drink with a classic pizza, six oysters or a tartine. It is one of the few picks here that works on a Sunday. Bergen Street on the F and G is four minutes away.

Deal checked Oct 15, 2026 on the bar's own site.

  4. 4. Mayfield Crown Heights

    OYSTERS $1.75
    Daily 5pm–6:30pm · 688 Franklin Avenue · Park Place (S)

A restaurant on Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights with a happy hour every day of the week, weekends included. The deal is oysters by the piece plus beer and wine specials, an easy way to start a date before dinner on Franklin. The window is short and early, and the restaurant takes reservations, so book the start of the evening. Park Place on the Franklin Avenue Shuttle is a minute away.

Deal checked Oct 15, 2026 on the bar's own site.

  5. 5. La Devozione Chelsea

    Marinated olives $6.00
    Mon–Fri 5pm–7pm · 428 W 16th St · 14th Street (A, C, E, L)

An Italian restaurant and cocktail bar on West 16th Street in Chelsea. The weekday happy hour is served at the cocktail bar and communal tables only, and the food list includes crispy pasta chips made from spaghetti aglio e olio, a marinated olive plate and fried mac and cheese lollipops. The High Line runs a short walk to the west. The 14th Street A, C, E and L station is five minutes away.

Deal checked Oct 15, 2026 on the bar's own site.

  6. The street outside Cha Cha Tang in West Village

    6. Cha Cha Tang West Village

    House Cocktails $10 · Beer $6
    Mon–Fri 5pm–6:30pm · 257 Avenue of the Americas · Houston Street (1)

A bar on Sixth Avenue in the West Village whose weekday happy hour covers house cocktails and martinis, red and white wine by the glass and beer, with a short food list that includes vegetable spring rolls and steamed crystal shrimp dumplings. The window is short and ends early, so meet straight from work. Washington Square Park is a short walk away. Houston Street on the 1 is three minutes away.

  7. The street outside Da Capo in Upper West Side

TAYLOR WHO Vodka $16 · LIMONCELLO SPRITZ $12
    Mon–Fri 5pm–7pm · 322 Columbus Ave · 72nd Street (1, 2, 3)

An Italian and American bar on Columbus Avenue on the Upper West Side. The weekday happy hour is served at the bar only and covers a short cocktail list, including a limoncello spritz and the Taylor Who, made with vodka, house hibiscus and lemon. Central Park is a few minutes east and stays open late, so a walk after drinks is easy. The 72nd Street 1, 2 and 3 station is five minutes away.

  8. The street outside Sweet Afton in Astoria

    8. Sweet Afton Astoria

$10 select house cocktails, beer & shot
    Mon–Thu 4pm–7pm · 30-09 34th Street · 30th Avenue (N, W)

A bar on 34th Street in Astoria with an early-week happy hour, Monday to Thursday on our listing. The deal covers select house cocktails, marked on the menu, and a beer and shot. The cocktail list runs from a dirty pickle martini to a spicy margarita, so ask which ones count before you order. It is three minutes from 30th Avenue on the N and W.

Deal checked Oct 15, 2026 on the bar's own site.

Time the date around the happy hour window

Most happy hours on our list run on weekdays and end early in the evening, so the date has to start early too. Meet at the start of the window, not near the end: you get the full deal, an easier table and time for a second round before prices change. If one of you works late, look for the bars whose window runs every day or on Sunday, like Therapy Wine Bar, Mayfield and Big Tiny.

Book if you can. Seven of these eight picks list online reservations, and an early slot is usually the easiest one to get. Ask whether the happy hour applies at your table: Da Capo serves it at the bar only, and La Devozione limits it to the cocktail bar and communal tables. Sitting side by side at a bar is a good date seat anyway. To find a deal running at this exact moment, open happy hours now, or pick a day such as Tuesday or Sunday.

Wine, cocktails or small plates

Decide what kind of date it is before you pick the bar. A wine happy hour usually means a house red and white by the glass, sometimes sparkling or rosé. Big Tiny goes further with five styles, including orange wine, and Therapy Wine Bar pours a wine of the day. A cocktail happy hour tends to cover a few named drinks rather than the whole menu, as at Da Capo, Cha Cha Tang and Sweet Afton, so read the offer list first.

If you want dinner out of it, go for food. Bar Baserri's deal is almost all tapas, La Devozione has several small plates on its list, and Mayfield's oysters make a good opener. Our cheap happy hour food guide and the oyster happy hours page have more options. Sharing three or four plates between two people can stand in for dinner.

Pair it with a free walk nearby

A cheap date gets better with a free second act. From Bar Baserri, Domino Park is a few minutes away on the Williamsburg waterfront, and the park's own site lists it as open daily until 11 p.m. From La Devozione, the High Line is a short walk west; it is free and open into the evening, closing earlier in winter, per Friends of the High Line. See happy hours near the High Line for more stops on that stretch.

From Cha Cha Tang, it is a short walk to Washington Square Park and its marble arch, designed by Stanford White and dedicated in 1895, according to NYC Parks. From Da Capo, Central Park is a few blocks away, and the Central Park Conservancy lists it as open daily until 1 a.m. For a longer free outing, the Staten Island Ferry costs nothing, runs around the clock and passes the Statue of Liberty on its roughly 25-minute crossing, according to NYC DOT.

A few rules for a cheap date

Check the card on the day. Happy hours change, and the live hours and prices on each pick are more current than any article. Order the deal items, not the regular list, and ask once which drinks count, since many deals name exact cocktails or a single house wine. Keep the bar tab and the dinner plan in the same neighborhood so you are not paying for a cab between them.

If the first bar is full, have a backup a few blocks away. The happy hour map shows every deal near you, and neighborhood pages such as Williamsburg, West Village and Upper West Side list the alternatives close to these picks.

Many restaurants serve the happy hour at the bar only, even when you book a table: ask when you reserve.

Questions

What is a good cheap date night idea in NYC?

Book an early table during a happy hour at a wine bar or a small-plates restaurant, then take a free walk nearby. Bar Baserri in Williamsburg pairs well with Domino Park, La Devozione in Chelsea with the High Line, and Da Capo on the Upper West Side with Central Park.

Which NYC happy hours work on a Sunday date?

Therapy Wine Bar in Bed-Stuy and Mayfield in Crown Heights run their deals every day, and Big Tiny in Carroll Gardens runs Sunday through Thursday. Check each card for the current window before you go.

Can you make a reservation for happy hour?

Often, yes. Seven of the eight picks here list online reservations, including Mayfield, Bar Baserri, Cha Cha Tang and Da Capo. Ask whether the deal applies at your table, since some places serve it only at the bar.

Is happy hour food enough for dinner?

It can be if you share. Bar Baserri's happy hour is mostly tapas, La Devozione has several small plates, Big Tiny pairs a drink with a pizza, oysters or a tartine, and Therapy Wine Bar adds bites. Order early in the window.

What free things can we do after drinks?

Walk the High Line before it closes in the evening, stroll Central Park, which is open until 1 a.m., visit the arch in Washington Square Park or ride the free Staten Island Ferry, which runs 24 hours a day according to NYC DOT.

When should we meet for a happy hour date?

At the start of the window. Most deals on our list run on weekdays and end early in the evening, so starting early gives you the full deal, an easier table and time for a second round.

How we put this together

Picks come from our list of NYC bars: we looked for wine bars, cocktail bars and restaurants with small plates, using each bar's tags and published offers, and left out bars whose latest recheck found a changed or partial deal. Happy hours come from each bar's own website, rechecked October 15, 2026. Park and ferry facts come from Domino Park, Friends of the High Line, NYC Parks, the Central Park Conservancy and NYC DOT, checked October 16, 2026.
