How Much to Tip at a Bar in NYC (and How Happy Hour Changes the Math)

How much to tip at a bar in NYC? NYC Tourism's guide puts the custom at a dollar or more per drink, or 18 to 20 percent when you pay a whole tab by card. Tipping is a custom, not a law, but it is a real part of bartenders' pay. At a happy hour such as Phebes in the East Village or The Wolfhound in Astoria, etiquette writers suggest tipping on the regular menu price, not the deal price.

Tipping is the part of a New York night out that confuses visitors most, and plenty of locals second-guess it too. There is no law that sets a bar tip. What exists is a strong custom, described in NYC Tourism's visitor guide and in etiquette advice from food and drink writers, plus a few legal facts that shape your bill: the city sales tax, and how service charges work.

This guide walks through the customs as they are usually described, then the math: per drink versus per tab, where tax fits, and what to do when the drinks are discounted. The five picks are happy hours on our list with a clear, itemized drink deal, spread across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx, so you can practice the math on a real menu.

If you come from a country without tipping

In much of the world, the price on the menu is what you pay. In New York, a bar tab usually has two more pieces: sales tax, which is the law, and the tip, which is custom. Nobody can legally make you tip a bartender, but NYC Tourism's guide says bartenders typically expect it. New York labor law lets employers count tips toward part of a tipped food and drink worker's minimum wage, so for the person behind the bar, tips are part of the paycheck, not a bonus.

There are exceptions. NYC Tourism notes that some places run a no-tipping policy and say so on the menu or bill, usually with a service or administrative charge or higher prices instead. Restaurants may also add a gratuity for larger groups. If you see a line labeled gratuity or service charge, read it before you add more.

Per drink or per tab

NYC Tourism describes two common ways to tip a bartender. Paying as you go, the custom is at least a dollar per drink, and more when the drinks are pricey, such as a craft cocktail. Running a tab on a card, the usual move is 18 to 20 percent of the total instead.

The two methods can land in different places. A dollar on a simple beer is a bigger share of the price than a dollar on a cocktail, so a percentage tends to be fairer on an expensive round, and per-drink cash tends to be generous on cheap beer. Pick one approach for the night and stick with it.

Sales tax and your bill

Food and drink served for on-premises consumption at bars and restaurants is taxable in New York State. In New York City, the combined sales tax rate is 8.875 percent, made up of 4.5 percent city tax, 4 percent state tax and a 0.375 percent Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge, according to the NYC Department of Finance. Voluntary tips you leave are not subject to sales tax, according to the state tax department.

For sit-down dining, NYC Tourism frames the standard tip as a share of the pre-tax bill. A quick check: double the tax line on your receipt and you get a little under 18 percent of the pre-tax total, the low end of the usual range. Round up from there.

Happy hour math: full price or deal price?

This is where people disagree most. The common advice from etiquette writers, including a bartending etiquette piece in HuffPost and a guide from Food Republic, is to tip on the regular menu price, not the discounted one. The logic: the bartender makes the same drink and does the same work at the happy hour price. The HuffPost piece also suggests tipping on comped drinks.

If you do not know the regular price, Food Republic suggests tipping about 25 percent of the price you paid. Not everyone follows this, and nothing requires it. A fair middle ground is to tip at least what you would on a full-price round of the same drinks. Our pick cards show live happy hour prices, so you can see how far the deal moves the bill.

Cards, cash and tabs

If you pay by card, the screen will usually ask about the tip. NYC Tourism notes that card terminals usually offer preset choices, often 15, 18 or 20 percent, along with a custom amount or no tip. The presets are suggestions, so choose what fits the service.

Cash still works well for per-drink tips, especially at a crowded bar where you order one round at a time. If you open a tab, you tip once when you close out, which keeps things simple for a group. Before you sign, check the bill for a service charge or an added gratuity, so you do not tip twice by accident.

Questions

Is tipping at a bar required by law in New York City?

No. Tipping a bartender is a custom, not a legal requirement. A gratuity or service charge printed on your bill is part of what you owe, though, so read the bill before you add more.

How much should I tip per drink in NYC?

NYC Tourism's guide describes the custom as at least a dollar per drink, and more when the drinks are expensive. On a card tab, it suggests 18 to 20 percent of the total instead.

Should I tip on the happy hour price or the full price?

Common etiquette advice, from writers at HuffPost and Food Republic, is to tip on the regular menu price, since the work is the same. It is a custom, not a rule. If you do not know the regular price, Food Republic suggests about 25 percent of what you paid.

What is the sales tax on drinks at NYC bars?

The combined sales tax rate in New York City is 8.875 percent, according to the NYC Department of Finance. Food and drink served at bars and restaurants is taxable.

Do I tip on the amount before or after tax?

NYC Tourism frames the standard restaurant tip as a share of the pre-tax bill. Tipping on the total instead works out a little higher.

Can I tip on a card at an NYC bar?

Yes. Card terminals usually show preset tip options, often 15, 18 or 20 percent, plus a custom amount. Cash per drink is the other common approach NYC Tourism describes.

How we put this together

Tipping customs come from NYC Tourism's tipping and sales tax guide, plus happy hour tipping advice from HuffPost and Food Republic, presented as custom rather than law. The sales tax rate comes from the NYC Department of Finance, tax on restaurant and tavern sales and on tips from the state tax department's bulletin, and the tip credit from the New York State Department of Labor, all checked October 16, 2026. Bar picks come from the 718 bars on our list: we kept bars with an itemized drink deal confirmed on their own websites on October 15, 2026, and chose five across four boroughs.
