What Time Is Happy Hour in NYC? The Answer From 685 Bars
What time is happy hour in NYC? Across the 685 bars we track, the most common window is 4 to 7 p.m., Monday to Friday: 4 p.m. is the most common start and 7 p.m. the most common end. About three in five bars run happy hour on weekdays only. For exceptions, Cafe Luce in Midtown East starts before lunch, LOLITA near Times Square adds a late-night round every day, and 169 Bar on the Lower East Side runs its deal only on weekends.
Ask a New Yorker when happy hour is and you will hear "after work." That is right most of the time, but the exceptions are where the good afternoons and late nights are. So we counted. We took every happy hour window on our list of 685 bars across the five boroughs, 785 windows in all, and tallied when they start, when they end, which days they run and how that changes from borough to borough.
The five picks each stand for one pattern: an early window, an all-day one, a late-night one, a weekend-only one and the classic weekday slot. Their exact hours and prices sit on the cards, which update from each bar's own site, so check those on the day you go.

The most common happy hour times
Start times bunch up in mid-afternoon. Of the 685 bars, 252 have a window that starts at 4 p.m., the most common start by a wide margin, followed by 3 p.m. (147 bars) and 5 p.m. (106 bars). In all, 503 bars, close to three in four, have a window starting between 3 and 5 p.m. Another 72 bars list only an end time, so they sit out the start-time counts.
End times are even more uniform. 341 bars have a window ending at 7 p.m. and 194 end at 6 p.m., so 570 bars, about five in six, finish between 6 and 7 p.m. Only 58 run to 8 p.m. The most common pairing is 4 to 7 p.m. (125 bars), then 4 to 6 (93), 5 to 7 (70), 3 to 7 (64) and 3 to 6 (60). Walk into a bar at 5:30 p.m. on a weekday and a deal is likely running; at 7:15 p.m., most have just ended. Our happy hour now page shows the deals running at the moment you open it.
Weekdays vs. weekends
Happy hour in New York is mostly a weekday habit. 404 of the 685 bars, about three in five, run it on weekdays only, and 298 of those keep the straight Monday to Friday pattern. The other 281 have a window on at least one weekend day, and 191, a little over one in four, run a deal all seven days. Only six bars save their happy hour for the weekend alone.
Tuesday through Thursday are the safest bets. Thursday has the most bars with a deal (672), then Wednesday (669) and Tuesday (653). Friday drops to 603, and Monday is lower at 587, since 98 bars have no Monday happy hour. Sunday (264 bars) edges out Saturday (235). Our weekend happy hours page keeps that list current.
Early, all-day and late-night windows
A minority of bars break the after-work mold. 106 have a window that starts before 3 p.m., and 87 start by noon or when the doors open, often with a long lunch-to-evening window like Chateau 49's. Our guide to early happy hours covers the ones worth an afternoon off.
At the other end, 28 bars have a window starting at 9 p.m. or later, three of them after midnight. These are reverse happy hours, and 20 of the 28 run them as a second round on top of an earlier window, the way LOLITA does. Late windows peak midweek: 24 bars run one on Wednesday, against 17 on Saturday. In all, 78 bars run more than one window. See late-night happy hours for the list, and our bar closing time guide for how late New York bars can legally serve.
How the boroughs differ
4 p.m. is the most common start in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, and 7 p.m. the most common end everywhere, but the details shift. Brooklyn starts later: 43 of its 158 bars, about one in four, have a window starting at 5 p.m., against 53 of 445 in Manhattan, about one in eight. Manhattan ends earlier: a third of its bars (152) have a window ending at 6 p.m., against fewer than one in five in Brooklyn (29).
Manhattan is also the borough for weekend deals: 201 of its 445 bars run on at least one weekend day, while in Brooklyn 108 of 158 bars are weekday only. Queens sits in between, with 27 of 68 bars offering a weekend deal. Manhattan has 20 of the 28 late-night windows, Brooklyn 6 and Queens 2. The Bronx and Staten Island have seven bars each on our list, too few to call a trend, though 3 p.m. is the most common start in both.
The rules, and how to check before you go
Happy hour itself is legal in New York, but bottomless deals are not. State law bars a licensee from offering unlimited drinks over a set period of time for a fixed price, so a New York happy hour means a lower price per drink, not an open bar.
Schedules change with the seasons, the sports calendar and new management, so treat any list as a starting point. Our cards pull each bar's hours from its own site, with the date we last checked on every listing.

Questions
What time is happy hour in NYC?
Most often 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays. In our data on 685 bars, 4 p.m. is the most common start (252 bars) and 7 p.m. the most common end (341 bars), and 503 bars have a window starting between 3 and 5 p.m.
Do NYC bars have happy hour on weekends?
Some do, but most do not. 281 of the 685 bars on our list run happy hour on at least one weekend day and 191 run it every day, while 404 keep it to weekdays. Sunday has slightly more deals (264 bars) than Saturday (235).
Which day has the most happy hours in NYC?
Thursday, with 672 bars on our list running a deal, just ahead of Wednesday (669) and Tuesday (653). Friday (603) and Monday (587) have fewer, and Saturday has the fewest of the week.
Are there late-night happy hours in NYC?
Yes, at 28 bars on our list, with a window starting at 9 p.m. or later. Twenty of them run it as a second round after an earlier happy hour, like LOLITA near Times Square. Twenty are in Manhattan.
Are bottomless drink deals legal in New York?
No. New York's Alcoholic Beverage Control Law bars licensees from offering unlimited drinks over a set period for a fixed price. Happy hour discounts on each drink are allowed.
How we put this together
We counted every happy hour window for the 685 bars on our list on October 23, 2026, using the schedules each bar publishes on its own site, last checked between September 2 and October 23, 2026. A bar counts once in each finding even when it has several windows. Bars that list only an end time (72) are left out of start-time counts, and late-night means a window starting at 9 p.m. or later. Shares are of bars, not of discounts. The note on unlimited-drink offers comes from New York's Alcoholic Beverage Control Law section 117-a as published by the New York State Senate.
